The AWWA C504 concentric double flange butterfly valve from Laux Valve is engineered specifically for municipal waterworks and industrial water applications. Built to the stringent AWWA C504 standard with a Class 125 pressure rating, this valve features a vulcanized rubber seat bonded directly to the ductile iron body and flat face flanges per ASME B16.1 Class 125 /250lb for direct mating to cast iron flanged fittings and valves.

The vulcanized seat design eliminates the risk of seat movement, extrusion, or blowout under pressure, providing reliable bubble-tight shut-off over decades of service. The concentric design centers the disc on the valve bore axis, delivering consistent sealing with lower operating torque.

What is a AWWA C504 Butterfly Valve?

An AWWA C504 butterfly valve is a rubber-seated flanged butterfly valve designed, manufactured, and tested to the American Water Works Association standard C504. It is specifically engineered for water supply and water treatment applications, featuring a rubber seat bonded to the valve body, ductile iron construction, and corrosion-resistant internal components. AWWA C504 is the most widely referenced standard for waterworks butterfly valves in North America and in international projects following US water industry practices.

What is the difference between AWWA C504 and an industrial butterfly valve?

AWWA C504 valves are designed specifically for waterworks service: they have rubber seats bonded to the body (not the disc), heavier ductile iron bodies for buried service, fusion-bonded epoxy coatings rated for immersion, and longer face-to-face dimensions for flange integrity. Industrial butterfly valves built to API 609 or similar standards may have different seat designs (PTFE, metal), lighter body sections, and are not tested to C504's specific hydrostatic and seat leakage requirements.

What pressure classes are available for AWWA C504 butterfly valves?

Two pressure classes: Class 150B (200 psi / 13.8 bar cold working pressure) and Class 250B (300 psi / 20.7 bar CWP). Class 150B covers most municipal water distribution and treatment plant applications. Class 250B is specified for high-head pumping stations and deep-buried transmission mains.

What sizes are available?

Standard sizes from 3 inches (DN80) through 72 inches (DN1800). Commonly stocked sizes: 3", 4", 6", 8", 10", 12", 14", 16", 18", 20", 24", 30", 36", 42", 48". Larger sizes up to 72" are built to order with extended lead times.

What body and seat materials are available?

Body is ductile iron per ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12 as standard. Seat material: EPDM (standard, NSF 61 certified for drinking water) and NBR (for wastewater or hydrocarbon contact). Disc is ductile iron with SS316 edge, or full CF8M stainless steel as an option.

Can AWWA C504 butterfly valves be automated?

Yes. All AWWA C504 butterfly valves from Laux Valve include an ISO 5211 top mounting flange and are available with electric motor actuators (multi-turn or quarter-turn), hydraulic cylinder actuators, pneumatic actuators, and manual gear operators. Electric actuators are commonly specified for remote operation in water treatment plants and pumping stations. Actuators are factory-mounted and stroke-tested before shipment.

What is the difference between short body and long body AWWA C504 valves?

Short body (standard) conforms to AWWA C504 Table 1 face-to-face dimensions 鈥?the most common configuration for Class 150B valves. Long body provides an extended face-to-face (typically 1.5x to 2x the short body length) for additional flange joint rigidity. Long body is standard for Class 250B ratings and is sometimes specified for sizes above 48" or for buried installations with high soil loads.

Can these valves be used for buried service?

Yes. Because AWWA C504 butterfly valves are double-flanged (flanges on both sides), they are inherently rated for end-of-line dead-end service at full rated pressure in either direction. Unlike wafer butterfly valves, the flanged body can hold full pressure with a blind flange on one side.
